The Anatomy of Seeing
Slow down. Learn to see. One thing at a time
Photography begins with noticing light, shadow, space and the moments around us. The Anatomy of Seeing helps us practise this together.
The Four Clusters
01 · Learning to See
LIGHT · SHADOW · EDGE
Notice how light reveals, shadow changes what we see, and edges separate or connect things.
02 · Scene Construction
PLANE · SURFACE · REPETITION
See how the parts of a scene work together to give a photograph structure.
03 · Shaping Space
WIDE · NORMAL · TELEPHOTO
Explore how your viewpoint and choice of lens change the way space feels.
04 · Shaping Time
DURATION · MOMENT · ANTICIPATION
Explore how a photograph can show passing time or capture a moment.
The fourth week of each cluster is Integration Week. We bring the three subjects together in our photographs.
How We Learn Together
Each week, we explore one subject through the Spotlight Photo, Newsletter, practice, weekend shooting and Members’ Gallery.
You do not have to do everything. Come in when you can. Read what helps. Try what suits you. Carry forward what you have.
How Basic and PLUS Studio Work Together.
Both follow the same weekly subject. If we are learning about shadow, both are about shadow.
Basic helps you notice shadow and try one simple photo exercise.
PLUS Studio takes the same subject further. You take more photos, compare what changed, and decide what works best for you.
Taking It Outside
During Integration Week, you can join a guided Photo Field Trip or arrange your own Open Practice session. Go out with your camera and see how the three subjects work together in a real place.
A Common Foundation
The Anatomy of Seeing gives us a shared starting point. We learn to see one thing at a time. If you later want to develop greater clarity, control or your own photographic direction, De-CONNECT offers separate Special Programs.
The four clusters give us the map. The weekly rhythm gives us the time to explore it.
