Everything we recognise begins with a surface.

Before we know something is wood, stone, metal or skin, we first see how its surface meets the light.

Photography cannot record what is inside an object.

It records only the surface that faces the camera.

Yet from that surface we imagine weight, temperature, age and even history.

The world becomes visible because every surface responds to light in its own way.

Most of us look through surfaces rather than at them.

We recognise a brick wall without noticing the roughness of the bricks.

We see a face without observing the texture of skin.

We know a table is made of wood, but rarely pay attention to the grain that tells us how the tree once grew.

Our minds are trained to identify objects.

Photography asks us to notice how those objects appear.

That small shift changes everything.

Surface gives form its character.

Without it, objects become simple shapes.

A polished stone feels different from weathered concrete.

A freshly painted wall speaks differently from one marked by years of rain and sunlight.

Surface reveals time.

It suggests touch.

It hints at the stories an object has lived through.

Photographs often become memorable not because of what they show, but because of how the surfaces within them make us feel.

Photographers gradually become students of surfaces.

They notice how morning light reveals the grain of old timber.

How side light uncovers wrinkles that disappear beneath flat lighting.

How rain transforms asphalt into a mirror.

How worn paint, cracked leather and rusted steel quietly become subjects in themselves.

Instead of searching only for interesting objects, they begin searching for interesting surfaces.

Surface is where light becomes visible.

Light has no shape until it touches something.

Every photograph is therefore a conversation between light and surface.

Change either one, and the photograph changes.

The object may remain exactly the same, yet its character can become gentle, harsh, mysterious or inviting simply because the surface is revealed differently.

To understand surface is to understand that photography is not only about what things are.

It is about how they appear.

Once you begin noticing surfaces, you find them everywhere.

The peeling paint on an old doorway.

The smooth glass of a café window.

The ripples left in wet sand after the tide.

The worn pages of a favourite book.

The fabric of someone's jacket catching the afternoon sun.

The bark of a tree.

The polished handrail touched by thousands of hands.

Each surface reflects light differently.

Each quietly changes the feeling of a photograph.

This week, spend a little less time looking for interesting subjects.

Instead, slow down and look at the surfaces around you.

Notice how light reveals them.

Notice how they tell stories without words.

Ask yourself one simple question:

What surfaces have I been looking through, instead of truly seeing?
