Take a quiet moment to notice the surface of something familiar.
A person with a red umbrella walks across snow. We may notice the umbrella first. Today, look at the snow beneath and around the person.
NOTICE
Look at the snow in the left study image.
Some footprints remain separate. Others overlap into darker patches.
Now look at the right image. The snow beside the plants is smoother, with fewer marks.
SEE
The footprints show a route across the snow.
The marked route and smoother snow give different parts of the ground a different appearance.
This is how SURFACE contributes to Scene Construction: it helps us tell areas apart through the visible character of the material.
TRY
Find a familiar surface, such as a worn step or a painted wall.
Look across it. Notice a patch that looks different from the area around it. It may be smoother, scratched or peeling.
If you like, make one photograph with your phone. Include enough of the surface to show that difference.
When something catches your eye, look across its surface. Notice the marks, folds or smoother patches that give it character.
No rush. Just notice one surface today.
