Photo Review SOP

See More Clearly Through Reflection

Photography does not improve simply by taking more photographs.

Growth often happens when we pause, look carefully at our work, and reflect on what we are seeing.

Photo Review provides written feedback designed to help you understand your photographs more deeply and continue developing your practice.

The purpose is not judgment.

The purpose is learning.

How Photo Review Works

A Photo Review Cycle consists of 10 review slots.

Each review slot allows you to submit one photograph and receive personalised written feedback.

You may use your review slots at your own pace.

Many members find it helpful to submit a photograph, reflect on the feedback, spend time practising, and then return with their next image.

There is no need to use all 10 review slots at once.

You may spread your submissions across days, weeks, or even months.

Photography develops through observation, practice, reflection, and repeated experience.
The review process is designed to support that rhythm.

Once all 10 review slots have been used, the review cycle is complete.

Members who wish to continue may activate a new Photo Review Cycle.

What You May Receive Feedback On

Photo Review is closely connected to the current De-CONNECT learning rhythm.

The primary focus of the feedback is how the submitted photograph relates to the theme being explored during that period.

For example:

• Light
• Shadow
• Edge
• Plane
• Reflection
• Repetition
• Isolation
• Near–Far
• Directional Structure

Feedback may explore questions such as:

• How clearly is the weekly idea being observed?
• Where is the theme visible within the photograph?
• What strengthens the connection to the topic?
• What opportunities exist to explore the idea more deeply?
• How might the photograph be simplified or clarified?

Additional observations may also include:

• Composition and visual structure
• Use of light and shadow
• Timing and moment
• Colour relationships
• Depth and visual layers
• Subject emphasis and attention

Not every photograph requires discussion of every area.

The feedback will respond to the photograph that has been submitted and the topic currently being explored.

The goal is not to determine whether a photograph is good or bad.

The goal is to help you see the weekly idea more clearly and strengthen your ability to recognise it in your own work.

Why We Use A Review Cycle

Most photography feedback happens quickly.

A photograph is shown.
A comment is made.
Everyone moves on.

The Photo Review Cycle encourages a slower approach.

Submit a photograph.
Reflect on the feedback.
Go out and photograph again.

Then return with your next image.

Over time, your understanding of the weekly themes begins to deepen.

Monthly Photo Review Live

On the first Sunday of every month, we host a short 30-minute Photo Review Live session for members.

During the session, we discuss three selected photographs from the reviews submitted during the previous month.

Selection is based primarily on how strongly a photograph relates to the themes and ideas being explored within the De-CONNECT learning rhythm.

Relevance is the most important consideration.

Artistic achievement, equipment used, technical complexity, and photographic experience are not part of the selection criteria.

A simple photograph that clearly explores the month's theme may be selected ahead of a more technically accomplished image.

Selected photographs become an opportunity for shared learning across the community.

Recordings of the Monthly Photo Review Live sessions are archived within the Learning Library.

Over time, these sessions become a growing collection of practical examples that demonstrate how the weekly themes can be observed and explored through photography.

Privacy & Confidentiality

Photo Review is intended to be a safe and supportive space for learning.

All written review feedback remains private between the reviewer and the member who submitted the photograph.

Review comments are not visible to other members.

Submitted photographs are not shared publicly as part of the review process.

The only exception is when a photograph is selected for discussion during the Monthly Photo Review Live session.

In such cases, the photograph may be shown as part of the educational discussion for the benefit of the community.

Only the selected photograph will be presented.

Private review comments and correspondence will remain confidential.
