Everything Exists Within a Stream of Time

For the past twelve lessons, we have learned to recognise how things exist in space. Now we begin learning how things exist in time.

Nothing in the world exists as a single, isolated moment. Every event, every action and every experience unfolds within a continuous stream of time. A bird taking flight, a child laughing, waves reaching the shore and clouds drifting across the sky are not individual moments. They are streams made up of countless moments flowing together.

Duration begins by recognising that everything we see exists within this continuous stream. Before we can understand moments, we must first recognise the stream from which they come.

We Notice Moments, Not the Stream

Our minds naturally divide life into memorable moments.

A smile.

A wave.

A jump.

A handshake.

These moments stand out because they are easy to remember. What we rarely notice is everything that connects them. Every action begins before the moment we recognise and continues after it has passed. The stream itself has no obvious beginning or end, so our attention quietly skips over it. We remember highlights instead of the continuous flow that gives those highlights meaning. Because of this, we often mistake life as a collection of separate moments rather than an uninterrupted unfolding of time.

Every Photograph Begins Before the Shutter

Recognising the stream of time changes the way we make photographs. We stop believing that every photograph should simply capture an instant. Instead, we begin asking where that instant belongs within the larger unfolding of the event. A photograph becomes more meaningful when the chosen moment reflects the story surrounding it. Understanding duration also reminds us that different subjects reveal themselves in different ways. Some ask for a single frame. Others require a longer exposure, a sequence of photographs or a body of work developed over time. The subject itself begins to determine how it should be photographed.

Learning to Read the Stream

Experienced photographers spend time observing before they decide to photograph. They watch how an event unfolds and ask what kind of time they are seeing. Does everything happen in an instant? Does the action continue for several seconds? Is the change so gradual that it can only be understood over weeks or years? Only after recognising the nature of the stream do they decide how to respond. Sometimes one frame is enough. Sometimes the photograph needs a longer exposure, a sequence or an extended series. Recognition always comes before technique.

Everything Is Always Becoming

Duration reminds us that nothing in the world is ever completely still. We often describe life as a series of separate events because it helps us organise our memories. Yet the world itself never stops. Morning becomes afternoon. High tide becomes low tide. Youth becomes old age. Even stillness exists within the passage of time. Seeing duration changes more than our photography. It changes the way we understand the world. Instead of seeing isolated moments, we begin seeing continuous change. We recognise that every moment belongs to something larger than itself.

The Stream Is Everywhere

Once you begin looking for the stream of time, it appears in ordinary places. Steam rising from a cup of coffee. Rain slowly filling a puddle. Leaves moving in the wind. Shadows travelling across a wall. A market becoming busy before gradually becoming quiet again. A child growing a little taller each year. A tree changing with the seasons. None of these experiences exist in a single moment. They unfold continuously, whether we notice them or not. The stream of time is always present. We simply learn to recognise it.
