Take a quiet moment to notice a familiar shape appearing again.
A ship under construction fills much of Edward Burtynsky’s photograph. Today, look at the exposed steel framework rising above its dark hull.
NOTICE
Look at the middle study image.
Find one steel member slanting towards the ship’s centre. Notice another with a similar shape and direction, then another at a different height.
SEE
These slanting steel members appear at several levels on both sides of the ship.
Their repeated shapes help us recognise the larger framework they belong to.
This is how REPETITION contributes to Scene Construction: similar parts appearing again help us see how a scene is put together.
TRY
Look at a row of chairs in a familiar place.
Find one chair back, then another with a similar shape. Notice where that shape appears again.
If you like, make one photograph with your phone. Include a few chairs so their repeated shapes are visible.
When something catches your eye, look nearby for another similar shape. Notice its second appearance before looking for more.
No rush. Just notice one shape appearing again today.
