Where Light Begins

De-CONNECT • Issue #01

Light does not appear all at once.

A place can be dark… then slowly, something starts to show.

You are not looking for a bright light.

You are not looking for a clear subject.

You are looking for the moment something becomes visible.

This is where photography begins.

Pause & Notice

Seeing is not instant.

There is a moment where something becomes visible.

If you slow down, you can notice it.

This moment is important.

De-CONNECT

Look around you right now. Can you find:

  • A room where light comes in from one side
  • A wall where light spreads slowly
  • A chair with light resting on it
  • A space where part is bright, and part is dark

These are simple things.

But they show you how light enters and settles.

Basic Notice

Light is not just brightness.

It is how something becomes visible.

Ask yourself:

  • Where does the light enter?
  • Where does it land?
  • Where does it stop?

Did you see it?

We see a quiet room.

Light comes in from the side, through a window.

A curtain softens the light.

The light spreads across the wall.

It touches part of a sofa.

Other areas stay dark.

Nothing is moving.

The room feels still.

The light feels calm.

What this teaches us

Light is not just something we see.

It is something that enters a space and stays there.

From the study:

  • Light enters
  • Light lands
  • Light holds

Your eyes do not go to the objects first.

They follow the light.

Where it enters.

Where it settles.

Where it becomes stronger.

That is what you should learn to notice.

How it works

Light shows things.

Shadow hides things.

But more than that — Light moves into a space

and then rests on certain areas.

Where it lands becomes what we notice.

Practice

Find a place where light enters from one side.

A window.

A doorway.

A small opening.

Stand still. Watch the light.

Look for:

  • Where it enters
  • Where it spreads
  • Where it settles

Now choose a moment where:

  • Part of the scene is visible
  • Part is still hidden

Or where:

  • Light is strong in one area
  • And fades into darkness

Take one photo. Ask yourself:

  • Does my eye follow the light?
  • Does the light guide where I look?

If yes, you are doing it right.

How to adjust

  • Too bright everywhere → move away from the light
  • Too dark → wait until light touches something
  • No focus → look for where light is strongest

Rules

  • Use one main light source
  • Keep some areas dark
  • Follow where the light lands, not just what it lights

The Bridge

We are not learning how to take photos.

We are learning how to see light.

Most people look for objects.

You are learning to notice how light enters, where it settles, and what it reveals.

And once you see this, you will realise — photography is not about the subject.

It is about how light makes something visible.

Enjoy.

Where Shadow Holds
De-CONNECT • Issue #02 Shadow is not just darkness. It is something real in your photo. When light hits something, you can see it. When light does not reach, shadow appears. But shadow is not empty. It has shape. It takes up space.   Pause & Notice  Sometimes, when you look at a scene, you stop searching for a subject. Your eyes slow down. They begin to notice the darker parts. You are not lo...
