I002 — Obscuration • SHADOW

Sep 24, 2026

24 SEPTEMBER 2026

Triptych study detail from André Kertész, Fork, 1928.

See Photo -https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/265532

One familiar object. One shadow beside it. Take a quiet moment to see how they connect.

A fork rests beside a plate. Its shadow stretches across the table. We know what a fork looks like, but its shadow helps us see it in a new way.

NOTICE

Look for a dark shape beside an object.
Notice where the dark shadow ends and the lighter surface begins.

Can you tell which object made the shadow?

SEE

Does the shadow look like the object?

Which way does the shadow go?

Does the shadow help you notice the object more clearly?

TRY

Find a potted plant near a window, a railing in the sun, or a small object near a lamp.

Look for a clear shadow. Make one photograph.

Then ask: Can I see the shadow and the object that made it?

The object may be small. Its shadow can make the moment feel larger. One darker shape is enough.
